What is Holistic Nursing?
Holistic nursing is defined as “all nursing practice that has healing the whole person as its goal” (American Holistic Nurses’ Association, 1998, Description of Holistic Nursing).
Holistic nursing is a specialty practice that draws on nursing knowledge, theories, expertise and intuition to guide nurses in becoming therapeutic partners with people in their care. This practice recognizes the totality of the human being – the interconnectedness of body, mind, emotion, spirit, social/cultural, relationship, context, and environment.
The holistic nurse is an instrument of healing and a facilitator in the healing process. Holistic nurses honor each individual’s subjective experience about health, health beliefs, and values. Holistic nurses may integrate complementary/alternative modalities (CAM) into clinical practice to treat people’s physiological, psychological, and spiritual needs. Doing so does not negate the validity of conventional medical therapies, but serves to complement, broaden, and enrich the scope of nursing practice and to help individuals access their greatest healing potential.
The practice of holistic nursing requires nurses to integrate self-care, self-responsibility, spirituality, and reflection in their lives. This may lead the nurse to greater awareness of the interconnectedness with self, others, nature, and spirit. This awareness may further enhance the nurses understanding of all individuals and their relationships to the human and global community, and permits nurses to use this awareness to facilitate the healing process.
What can you expect from your first experience with a holistic nurse?
Holistic nurses work within a philosophy of seeing the individual as a whole, which incorporates the aspects of body, mind, emotion and spirit.
- Your holistic nurse will have an air of calmness and centeredness
- Your holistic nurse will be a good listener
- There will be concern and questions related to all aspects of your life–body, mind, emotion and spirit
- There will be a non-judgmental attitude toward your issues and concerns
- Some holistic nurses specialize in nutritional and nutraceutical aspects of health care
- Some holistic nurses use modalities that work on energy fields in the body
- Holistic nurses blend traditional western medical practice with complimentary healing practices and are versed in both
- Be prepared to answer a number of questions or perhaps fill out a questionnaire before you even get to the first appointment. This is to help you think through things before the visit. Be clear about what you want out of the visit. Share this with the nurse.
What is Healing Touch?
Healing Touch is considered a complementary health approach, or modality, by the National Institutes of Health National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health(NIH/NCCIH) https://nccih.nih.gov/health/integrative-health
What is a modality?A modality is a specific approach to or method for healing. The NCCIH divides the various Complementary and Alternative modalities into four categories: (1) mind-body medicine, (2) biologically based practices, (3) manipulative and body-based practices, and (4) energy medicine. These modalities include a wide variety of approaches, from acupuncture to nutrition to meditation to chiropractic. In addition, NCCIH studies whole medicine systems, such as homeopathic and naturopathic medicine, and Ayurveda.
Healing Touch is an energy medicine modality utilized to help individuals access their greatest healing potential.
Healing Touch is a relaxing, nurturing energy therapy that uses gentle touch to assist in balancing physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. Healing Touch works with your energy field to support your natural ability to heal, is safe for all ages and works in harmony with standard or allopathic medical care.
Research continues to build the evidence base of positive outcomes in response to Healing Touch. However, it should be noted that individual experiences may vary.

My personal philosophy
Human beings possess innate healing capacity. Optimal well-being is seen as restoration of ‘right relationship’ with and among all we encounter in our lives. Relationships are integral to overall well-being and balance and conversely to dis-ease, imbalance and disharmony.
Healing, distinctly different from curing, can be facilitated from without but ultimately occurs within.
My training, personal experiences and work with clients over many years has convinced me that we are at our core whole and have limitless potential. We must
take a compassionate look at our lives from a holistic perspective and begin the process of recovering our innate flexible intelligence and potential. Our emotions are messengers, meant to be acknowledged and constructively expressed, and can free up clarity and peace of mind and promote well-being.
I enjoy being of assistance, whether with acute issues such as injuries, surgery and other traumas with the accompanying pain and often anxiety, as well as long standing issues of pain, dis-ase or disharmony, at any level of the body, mind, spirit. I love being able to utilize my skills and experience, as well as my intuition.
I consider it a privilege to be of assistance
My personal holistic health journey
Likely I was always a holistic nurse at heart, from the aspect of seeing the ‘whole person’, since the onset of my career, yet lacking in the area of self-care and self-awareness until a health crisis in 1994.
At the lowest point of my health challenges I came to acknowledge (discern) that the deterioration my health was due to poor choices, primarily based in low self-esteem and erroneous, rigid, and limiting beliefs about myself.
Requiring physical, mental, emotional and spiritual restoration, I chose to explore many alternative approaches for my recovery. I knew that symptom management would not suffice and I had to get to the root of what had led to the deterioration of my multidimensional well-being.
My initial months of recovery and utilization of a multitude of modalities, alternative thought and approaches to healing and the restoration of optimal health, lead me to my desire to become a holistic nurse.
Healing, like learning, is a process that can occur throughout one’s lifetime.
I continue to learn, heal and grow and am grateful for every opportunity life hands me to continue the process.
I am also grateful for the opportunity to utilize my training and experiences as well as my intuition and insight, as I support my clients in their health, wellness and healing goals.
